Polypropylene fiber — it is a synthetic fiber formed from a melt made of polypropylene. Polypropylene ropes have high elasticity and resistance to double bends, which makes them more durable than other ropes, for example, with polyamide ropes. Despite their superior flexibility, polypropylene ropes are inferior to polyamide ropes in terms of abrasion resistance. In the modern world, polypropylene products are widely used in various industries, replacing traditional ones hemp ropes, especially in shipping, construction, fishing and for towing services cargo and transport.
Advantages of polypropylene ropes:
- Elastic and electrical insulation properties - the ropes retain their shape and stability, and also effectively protect against the effects of electricity.
- Lightness and positive buoyancy - do not sink in water, which makes them ideal for marine work.
- Non-hygroscopicity - ropes do not absorb moisture, which prevents them from becoming heavier and changing their characteristics when wet.
- High durability resistant to acids, alkalis and organic solvents.
- Wicker construction ropes significantly increases their resistance to abrasion resistancemaking them two to three times more durable than twisted ropes. In this case, the ropes with end-to-end weaving (where all the elements of the product are intertwined) are more resistant not only to gradual wear, but also to local damage, due to the mutual clamping of the strands.
Disadvantages:
- Fluidity under load - polypropylene ropes can stretch a little under the influence of prolonged loads.
- Low resistance to solar radiation (ultraviolet) - ropes lose their characteristics when exposed to the sun for a long time.
- Low thermal stability - they may deform or lose their strength when exposed to high temperatures.
- Spreading nodes - knots on such ropes are prone to spreading, so it is recommended to make them double.
Application areas:
- Shipping services: mooring, towing.
- Construction: lifting and installation works.
- Fishing industry: for making fishing gear (such as trawls and cages).
- Cargo transportation: for mounting and towing.
